La Baraque Restaurant Review, Val D’Isere

The popular skiing destination of Val D’Isere is well known for its vibrant apres ski and restaurant scene. One of the more upmarket bar/brasserie/restaurants in the village is La Baraque, and we checked it out for dinner.

Ambience

The restaurant is fairly long and narrow, with booth-style seating running all the way down from the front area (which also features a nice bar) to the very back.

Upon entering the establishment, you may be lucky enough to be greeted by live music (available on most nights) which is great for the general atmosphere of the place.

The staff gave us a warm welcome, then continued to be very helpful and attentive.

It’s worth mentioning that booking at La Baraque is recommended or you may well end up having to look elsewhere (like across the street at Le Garage, which is definitely also worth a look).

Food

The menu is billed as traditional and fusion cuisine. It featured a selection of caviar, seafood (Les Fruits De Mer) and some tempting main courses, fondue and specials.

The Wagyu beef (€52) turned out to be a popular choice and I was very happy with it indeed. Absolutely delicious.

Drinks

Now, if you do like a glass of wine with your meal, as many of us do, you are probably used to seeing a selection from low to high cost. At La Baraque, the cost of the wines was more like from high to extremely high. So much so that no wine was ordered!

Beer on tap was available including Proper Job IPA at €8 per pint. It wasn’t particularly to my liking, but that’s not their fault. Alternative beers are available, such as Warsteiner.

Water was chargeable at €7 per bottle (Evian).

Conclusion

In summary, La Baraque makes for a good atmospheric night out and the food tried was of a very high standard. If you want all of the trimmings it will likely be one of the more pricy places to go to in Val D’Isere but it certainly delivers on all other fronts. Highly recommended. It’s worth mentioning that it is service compris, too, which is always a plus.
